      Calling all middle school girls (grades 6-8) across Orange County! On Saturday, February 29, 2020 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Sage Hill School will host its 3rd annual GEMfest – a celebratory conference that aims to inspire young girls to “leap into their passions” and educate them (and their parents) about empowerment, self-esteem and independence. The day features a series of conversations with this year’s special guests + keynote speakers, and various interactive workshops that attendees can choose from. The event will also include an all-new Marketplace area featuring local businesses and non-profit organizations that attendees can visit & shop, as well as a sit-down lunch with approachable high school mentors.

      This year, GEMfest welcomes three inspirational women to join its lineup of featured guests, including entrepreneurs like Sophia Amoruso, founder of Girlboss Media and Nasty Gal Clothing and Gorjana Reidel, founder of gorjana Jewelry. Additionally, Kellee Kim, a contestant on CBS’s Survivor season 39 and advocate for empowerment will be delivering this year’s keynote speech to close the event. Featured workshops, which attendees will have an opportunity to sign-up for in advance upon registering, are planned to include topics such as self-defense, careers in science, public speaking, goal setting, coding and an introduction to bullet journaling.girl’s empowerment event: GEMFest. This exciting day is filled with workshops, panel discussions, and activities developed to inspire young girls. This year, the keynote speakers are NastyGal CEO and Founder, Sophia Amoruso, and Laguna Beach-based jewelry designer, Gorjana Reidel.

      GEMfest will take place on Sage Hill’s campus, located at 20402 Newport Coast Drive. Tickets are now on sale and can be purchased online at Space is limited, and two ticket options are available upon registration, including:

      Find Your Drive
      Back by popular demand, one of the most inspiring workshops from GEMfest 2019 returns to help a new group of girls find their passion and purpose. In this workshop girls identify their strengths, discover their unique leadership style, and create their own mission statement for improving the world.

      “She-Warrior” Self-Defense
      Self-defense expert and 3rd degree black belt, Jennifer Cassetta, will be leading a hands-on workshop that will equip girls with the moves and confidence to feel strong, safe and powerful. Audience members will learn both mental and physical techniques to avoid danger to set boundaries and stand up to bullying and harassment.

      Public Speaking
      Empower HerFuture’s Public Speaking workshop specifically emphasizes the importance of public speaking for young women. During this workshop, students will break down what qualifies a good speech and how to implement these characteristics into their own speeches. Finally, they will put these skills into practice through different public speaking exercises.

      Intro to Coding
      Spend a workshop falling in love with the world of code, beginning with Ruby! This workshop covers the fundamentals of Ruby, from data types to if-statements, aiming to inspire the coder in every girl. Let's get coding!

      Science Scoop
      Ignite a passion for science with the Science Scoop workshop, through interactive activities that identify and cultivate educational and career aspirations. The workshop will introduce five fascinating areas of science: animals, cosmetics, medicine, nature, and technology. These five fields cover a plethora of interests, making it easy for each individual to identify with one of the hundreds of jobs in each field.

      Yoga & Mindfulness
      Sage Hill School’s Wellness Coordinator and yoga instructor, Mer Connolly, will lead this workshop on how to use yoga and mindfulness to relieve stress, increase focus and memory, improve posture and discover your highest potential.

      GEM Team member Linda Hachim and professional photographer Krissy Saleh will lead this workshop about their passion for photography and guide girls through interactive exercises using photography to grow creativity and overcome insecurities.

      Grow Through What You Go Through
      This workshop with Bloom Foundation helps girls promote kindness in their own lives and stand up if they see bullying or disrespect, as well as providing strategies for overcoming challenges when they arise.
